Chris Gets Set To Play His Cards Right

A YOUNG professional is proving that he plays his cards right, after being selected as part of England's under-25 bridge team.

Chris Owen, 24, who is a qualified accountant at chartered accountant Clive Owen & Co LLP, is representing his country at the Channel Trophy, a contest that pits England's finest bridge players against teams from France, Holland and Belgium.

Chris, who is based in Darlington, and bridge partner Tom Dessain will travel to Lille in France from December 17-19, to compete in the three-day contest, as one of three pairs representing the country.

He said: "It is a real honour to have been selected for my national team.

"Tom and I are looking forward to taking part. We're a really competitive team, so we really hope to come home as winners at the end of the contest."

Chris and Tom, who is studying maths at Durham University, have also been selected to take part in the Junior Camrose Trophy, which takes place in February. At that tournament, the pair will face competition from teams representing Scotland, Wales, Northern Ireland and the Republic of Ireland.

Chris is following in the footsteps of his father, Clive Owen, who is a seasoned bridge player with several national championships to his name. Chris plays at St George's Bridge Club in Darlington, a club formed through the merger of three clubs including Hurworth Club which his father founded some forty years ago. The club is ranked among the top five teams in the North and Midlands, producing a host of championship-winning players.
