As you will no doubt be aware, the guidance in respect of the Coronavirus Job Retention continues to be updated by the government. For those who have not seen the latest guidance please see the following link:

We have received communication from HMRC that it is expected that the service to reclaim monies will launch on 20 April. Jim Harra, Chief Executive of HMRC, told the Treasury Committee of MPs on 8 April 2020 that claims will then be dealt with within 4 to 6 working days, so the cash should be in the employer's bank account by the end of April.

This is positive news and will hopefully allay some fears of the grant not being received until a much later date.

However, it is unclear from the HMRC narrative whether we will be able to assist our clients in making these claims. This is the case even where we provide a payroll service to a client. We are currently seeking to understand if we will have access to make claims, however in the meantime we would suggest all clients enrol for online access to their existing PAYE scheme where they do not already have this in place. This will ensure you are in a position to make a claim as soon as the service is launched should we not be able to assist.

We expect that most will already have an online reference and you will only need to enrol separately for the PAYE Online service if you didn’t get a login when you registered as an employer - this is usually because you didn’t register online.

Enrol for PAYE online

If you already have an online account for other taxes, e.g. Corporation Tax or Self-Assessment then login to your Government Gateway account and select the option to enrol for ‘PAYE for Employers’ under ‘Services you can add’ and enter your details

If you don’t have an online account, then you will need to enrol as a new user at the following https://www.gov.uk/paye-online/enrol and select ‘PAYE for Employers’ under ‘Organisation’. Once you have completed the registration process you will need to wait for a letter from HMRC containing your activation code which will be valid for 28 days.

Please note it can take up to 10 days for the enrolment process.

We will provide further updates as we receive more information.

As always we are here to help so please do contact us should you have any issues or concerns.
