Elizabeth Layfield

Associate Partner, Tax

I advise individuals, families and trustees on personal tax, with expertise in trusts, inheritance tax planning and estates.

I help families plan for the future, including considering how best to protect and pass on wealth. I also advise on existing trusts, particularly older or complex arrangements where the tax position or reporting requirements may need significant resolution.

I specialise in trust taxation, inheritance tax and succession planning, deceased estates and HMRC disclosures.

Where a trust has become complicated over time, I can review historic records to establish what has happened, identify any outstanding tax or reporting requirements and, where necessary, liaise with HMRC to bring matters up to date.

I also support trustees with ongoing tax compliance and work closely with solicitors, investment managers and other advisers.

My approach is practical and family focused. The most tax-efficient option is not always the right one, so I take time to understand what clients want to achieve and help them find an approach that works cohesively for their family as well as from a tax perspective.

I have been with Clive Owen for almost 28 years and have specialised in personal tax, trusts and estates for around 15 years.

I qualified as a Chartered Accountant with ICAEW in 2001 and as a Chartered Tax Adviser in 2002. I became a Trust and Estate Practitioner (TEP) in 2023, further developing my specialist knowledge of trusts and estates.

Frequently Asked Questions

FAQ's

Yes. Trusts can still play an important role in inheritance tax and succession planning, particularly where families want greater control over how and when assets pass to future generations.

Whether a trust is appropriate will depend on your circumstances, objectives and the assets involved, so it is important to consider the wider family position rather than tax alone.
