Learning &
Development

We support you to build skills, gain experience and grow your confidence, with opportunities to develop throughout your career with us.

Supporting you to grow

We believe the best learning and development happen through experience, opportunity and regular conversations about your career.

Whether you join us as a trainee, start your career with us or bring valuable experience from elsewhere, we want you to keep developing your skills and building your confidence. We’ll give you opportunities to learn, take on new challenges and progress your career in a way that works for you.

Our approach to professional development is practical and personal. We know that everyone’s career is different, so we encourage you to take ownership of your development while providing the support, feedback and opportunities you need to succeed.

Investing in future talent

Developing the next generation of talent is particularly important to us. We’re committed to providing trainee and earn and learn opportunities, giving people the chance to gain valuable professional experience while developing their skills and working towards recognised qualifications.

We believe this combination of learning and practical experience provides a strong foundation for a successful career. From the start, you’ll have the opportunity to apply what you learn, develop your professional skills and understand how your work contributes to our clients and the wider firm.

Our commitment to future talent has been independently recognised through Platinum membership of The 5% Club. The 5% Club celebrates employers that are committed to providing high-quality earn and learn opportunities and supporting people as they develop their careers.

We were also proud to receive the Youth Futures Award, recognising our work and commitment to supporting young people as they begin and develop their careers.

For our trainees, learning and development is part of the day-to-day experience. Alongside professional study and formal qualifications, you’ll learn from colleagues across the firm, gain practical experience and take on increasing responsibility as your knowledge and confidence grow.

You’ll have the opportunity to work with experienced colleagues and develop a broad range of skills. This can include technical knowledge, communication, teamwork, problem-solving and the confidence to work with clients and colleagues.

Learning through experience

We believe some of the most valuable professional development happens through the work you do every day.

As you gain experience, you’ll have opportunities to work on different tasks, take on new responsibilities and broaden your understanding of your role. Working alongside experienced colleagues also gives you the chance to learn from their knowledge and experience.

We encourage an open approach to learning. Asking questions, sharing ideas and learning from feedback are all important parts of developing your skills and confidence.

As your experience grows, so can your responsibilities. We want you to feel supported as you take the next step, while giving you the independence to develop your own approach and make a meaningful contribution.

Development throughout your career

Learning doesn’t stop when you qualify. As you progress with us, much of your development will continue through the work you do, the people you work alongside and the opportunities you have to broaden your experience.

Our bi-annual appraisal process provides dedicated time with your line manager to reflect on your performance, discuss your professional development and talk about your ambitions and next steps.

These conversations give you the opportunity to look at what you’re doing well, identify areas where you’d like to develop and consider what support could help you achieve your goals.

This is complemented by a follow-up meeting with the Partner for your area. It provides another opportunity to discuss your progress, career goals and future development.

We believe that regular conversations are more valuable than waiting for an annual review. That’s why our approach includes ongoing feedback and opportunities to talk about your development throughout the year.

Whether you want to develop your technical expertise, take on greater responsibility or explore a new area of the firm, we want to support you as your career evolves.

Building skills for the future

The world of work continues to change, and so do the skills needed to succeed. We want our people to have the knowledge, confidence and experience to meet new challenges and make the most of new opportunities.

Professional development can take many forms. It might involve learning from colleagues, gaining a new qualification, taking on a new responsibility or developing skills through your everyday work.

We encourage our people to think about where they want their careers to go and to have open conversations about how they can get there. This helps make learning and development a shared responsibility between you, your manager and the wider firm.

Our aim is to create an environment where people feel encouraged to learn, supported to develop and confident about taking the next step in their career.

Build your career with us

We’re proud of the investment we make in future talent and of creating an environment where people can continue to develop throughout their career with us.

Whether you’re taking your first steps into accountancy, completing a professional qualification or developing an established career, we want you to have the opportunity to learn, contribute and progress.

From your first day with us and throughout your career, you’ll have opportunities to build your skills, gain experience and take on new challenges.

Your development is an important part of your career with us.

The Forum Darlington

Allison Mckay, CEO and Founder Director, said:
“The Forum is a live music venue and community arts hub in central Darlington. It has rehearsal rooms, a recording studio, and delivers educational services and creative activities. The venue operates as a social enterprise in the form of a Community Benefit Society.
We needed investment to support our growth plan, including ambitious capital improvements to our Borough Road building. We approached the Clive Owen LLP grants team to help with the financial modelling and forecasts needed for a grant application. Their expertise was crucial for our investment bid.
Eleanor Kay from the Clive Owen LLP was assigned to support us. She took great care in understanding our needs and business model. This resulted in a comprehensive set of financial assumptions and forecasts.
I highly recommend Clive Owen LLP, particularly Eleanor and the grants team. Their support has strengthened our business case and growth plan, giving us confidence in our ability to raise investment and achieve our ambitions.”

ADM Pressings is a Newcastle-based manufacturer that specialises in metal pressings, production, fabrication, assembly, painting and customised turnkey solutions.

Following an introduction by Joe Routledge, Membership Manager of the North East Automotive Alliance, Grants Partner Carl Wright and the wider Grants team worked to a tight schedule to secure six-figure grant funding for new equipment.

Jonathan Hunter, Commercial Engineer at ADM Pressings, said:
Carl was very helpful at short notice for a bid writing assignment for a grant to fund new capital equipment for our site. He and his team quickly understood our needs and guided us through the process, providing easy to understand updates and insight along the way.  Always professional and efficient, this ensured a positive outcome, meaning we were successful in securing the grant and could achieve our project timeline.

I would have no hesitation reaching out to the Clive Owen LLP team again should similar services be required.

Clive Owen provided fantastic support in helping us secure funding through the Durham Business Growth Programme, which enabled us to relocate to larger premises and bring two sites together into a single, centralised facility.

Their advice and guidance throughout the process made the application straightforward and gave us the confidence we needed to move forward. Securing this funding has allowed us to strengthen our operations and create a solid platform for future growth.”

I am a Medical Doctor who lives in Spain and provides medical services in both the UK and Spain on a self-employed basis.

I have used Clive Owen LLP for over a decade. They have always helped me to do my tax returns and provide advice on tax matters.

It has been vital for my business to keep tax issues clear so there are no mix ups between both countries tax authorities. It is also of great value making sure I pay just the right amount of tax and keeping up to date with current regulations.

I would reccomend them to anybody who intends to do business in the UK and other EU Countries
