Martin Hobson

Audit and Accounts Partner

As an Audit and Accounts Partner at Clive Owen, I advise a diverse range of businesses across the North East, from sole traders and owner-managed businesses to larger companies and UK subsidiaries of international groups. I provide audit, accounts and business advisory services, helping clients understand their financial performance, meet their compliance obligations and make informed decisions about growth, structure and succession.

My approach is proactive and straightforward, helping clients make better use of their financial information and understand what their accounts are telling them. I work with clients throughout the year, ensuring they have appropriate systems and reporting in place to support informed decision-making.

I have particular expertise in professional services, with extensive experience advising legal practices across North Yorkshire and the North East. This includes SRA Accounts Rules audits, year-end accounts for solicitors and legal firms operating as partnerships, LLPs and limited companies, as well as advice on business structures, remuneration planning and regulatory compliance. I have also published articles on changes affecting the legal profession and was invited to speak on a panel at an event organised by the Legal Services Board.

I also have significant experience working with businesses involved in property construction and development, advising on bookkeeping systems, VAT compliance, HMRC matters, monthly reporting, year-end accounts and audit.

I have over 25 years’ experience as an accountant and auditor, having worked with businesses of all sizes throughout my career. I began my career with a smaller accountancy practice near Manchester, gaining broad experience across VAT, payroll, personal tax, capital gains tax, management accounts, accounts and audit.

I joined Clive Owen in 2015 and became a Partner in 2023. Alongside my client work, I head up the firm’s Administration department and act as Deputy Money Laundering Reporting Officer.
