I qualified with a small practice near Manchester, where I was responsible for a portfolio of clients and was heavily involved in the management of the firm. I gained experience in many different areas including audit, accounts, VAT, personal and corporate taxation, inheritance tax and payroll. I joined Clive Owen in 2015 following a relocation to North Yorkshire with my family.

As a partner in the audit and accounts team at Clive Owen LLP’s Darlington office I have a varied role. I look after a portfolio of SME clients and specialise in assisting new business start-ups helped by the fact that I am a Xero Certified Adviser. Having over 23 years of experience dealing with businesses in many different sectors means I can consider a wide range of issues. Holding the ACCA audit qualification and being an affiliate member of ICAEW I hold Responsible Individual (RI) status, enabling me to work closely with our audit clients. I also manage the accounts for our solicitor clients and deal with the specialist accounts rules they must follow. I also help to manage the staff in our team and review work to ensure that our clients receive a high-quality service and make sure deadlines are met.

Passing all my professional exams first time.¬† Being promoted to Senior Manager at Clive Owen within 18 months of joining the firm and being part of a great team. Did you always want to be an accountant? I was meant to be a footballer but was missed by the scouts! Having studied maths at A-Level I decided to enrol for an accounting for business degree at Staffordshire University. One of the reasons I chose the course was because it included gaining a year’s work placement experience, which I managed to secure at an accountancy practice. Having enjoyed that year, I decided to pursue a career in practice and start the professional examination process.

I am married with two young children – a son and daughter. I am kept busy with junior football club matches, swimming lessons and being taught how to play computer games properly. I play football and am a keen Manchester United fan, attending matches as often as I can. I also enjoy cycling and took part in the Tour de Yorkshire sportive 2017. More recently I have started mountain biking and hitting the forest trails of the North East.
