Career History/Qualifications

I started my career at HMRC in 2001 and worked as a VAT specialist and qualified as a Chartered Certified Accountant (ACCA) on HMRC’s Professional Accountancy Training Scheme.

After qualifying, I moved into practice with Deloitte specialising in VAT, advising a wide range of clients before returning to HMRC, in 2015, as a Head of Tax Professionalism. As Head of Tax Professionalism, I was also the lead VAT specialist for HMRC’s key international VAT units (NETPU and ORU) and VAT campaigns and projects.

Following the Brexit referendum, I moved into industry with FTSE100 global software provider Sage Plc, where I had responsibility for UK and EU VAT compliance and VAT advisory.

In 2019, I returned to Practice joining Tait Walker LLP (now Azets) as Head of VAT and Indirect Tax.

In 2022, I joined Armstrong Watson LLP, as a Tax Partner and Head of VAT and Indirect Tax, as well as Lead Office Partner for Newcastle Office, before joining Clive Owen in 2026 as VAT Partner.

Experience and expertise

With 20+ years VAT experience, I have worked with clients across the full spectrum of VAT.

I have a particular VAT specialism in Land and property, charity and not for profit (including education), international supplies of goods and services, SaaS, M&A due diligence and financial services.

As a former HMRC Head of Tax Professionalism, I have a deep knowledge of HMRC compliance methodology and approach and regularly assist clients with HMRC checks and investigations.

I’m also passionate about finding practical solutions that create real value, whether that’s improving cash flow, achieving absolute VAT savings or helping clients manage their VAT risk with confidence.

Professional memberships/directorships

Association of Chartered Certified Accountants (ACCA)

Chartered Institute of Taxation (CIOT)

Career highlights

Over the years, I’ve helped clients save/recover millions of pounds in VAT. Many of these have been not-for-profit organisations, where those savings have helped deliver vital charitable services.

I have also contributed to a number of key HMRC VAT policy/legislative changes (VAT on Online Marketplace, Brexit, and MTD for VAT). I was also the lead VAT adviser to the charity that successfully secured temporary zero-rating for energy-saving materials.

Hobbies and interests

I’m a long-suffering Newcastle United season ticket holder…although the last few seasons have been far more enjoyable!

Outside of work, I have a keen interest in history and politics and spend a lot of time reading. Most importantly, I enjoy spending time with my friends and family.
