Meet The Team – Yana Jones Hinkley

Date posted: 14th Dec 2023

We caught up with Yana on the Middlesbrough office, what it’s like working in tax and discussed her life outside work.

How did you become a tax senior?

Before joining Clive Owen, I attended Teesside University studying Accounting and Finance, and worked part-time at Screwfix.

In 2019, I joined the apprenticeship scheme at Clive Owen LLP, and undertook 9 professional exams, alongside hundreds of hours’ worth of CPD and in-house training. I learned a lot from the people I now work with day to day, and it was great to have that support system around me. My managers also ensured that I always had a good balance of work and studying, I never really felt overwhelmed with either, something which was important to me given how challenging the exams can be. After passing my exams, I received a dual qualification in CTA/ACA and was promoted to tax senior and now help the junior members of the team in their roles.

In 1 sentence, sum up the tax department.

The tax department is interesting and varied, it can be quite time pressured, and you never quite know what you’re going to get in your inbox!

What does your typical day look like?

My job really does differ every day, depending on the time of year, the type of work I carry out also changes. My primary work involves filing tax returns, engaging with clients to understand their personal and corporate objectives, and finding opportunities for tax planning. I work a lot with the younger members of the team, as they are on a similar learning scheme that I was, so I offer support and guidance where I can. I have also developed a really good relationship with the rest of the tax team so we always catch up during the day. We have a supportive and happy work team that knows each other’s strengths!

What do you like about the Middlesbrough office?

One of the benefits of the Middlesbrough office for me is that it is close to home. I work 8-4 as part of the flexible working hours we can utilise, and so especially on a Friday, it’s nice to get home and start my weekend. The open plan layout is good for both work and socialising, it’s good to speak to other departments about their work, as we often cross over quite a lot.

How do you help clients?

I think one of the best things I do for clients is really trying to understand them and their business. To help with tax planning and tax efficiency, we both need to understand what they are looking to achieve. I try to build strong relationships with all my clients and perform the best work I can for them.

Do you have any specialisms?

I would say most of my time is spent carrying out personal tax work, however, after my exams, I have began shifting into the corporate side of things. This is something I enjoy and hope I can become more confident and experienced in the corporate side of things in the next few years.

What are some of your career goals?

At the moment, I am very content in my role. I passed my exams in 2023, and so having the relief of not having to revise is a welcome break. I would like to progress to a managerial role in the future, as I think I can give a lot back to my younger colleagues as I have been through the same process as them.

What do you do when you are not at work?

I have 2 dogs, Pasha and Oslo (pictured below) who take up a lot of my time (Chihuahua’s are very needy). I love going for walks with them, although they don’t walk very far! I also go to the gym 3 to 4 times a week, enjoy reading, coffee dates, going out for food, and binge-watching reality TV!

Finally, sum up Clive Owen LLP in one word.

Opportunistic.
